  • Semester Course

    All Grades 

    This is the foundation course open to any student without any prerequisite requirements. Design Foundations emphasizes study of the elements and principles of art and design.  Students explore, organize, and use the elements and principles to create two and three-dimensional original work in various forms and media. Works by professional artists in all media areas will be studied. Students must pay a lab fee with this course.

    CERAMICS 1

    Prerequisite: Design Foundations or Art 1

    Original objects primarily pottery and some sculptures are created with clay using hand-building and glazing techniques. Objects created by technical qualities. Students are expected to allow for time outside of class to complete work satisfactorily. Students must pay a lab fee with this course.

  • Semester Course

    1/2 credit    
    Prerequisite: Design Foundations or Art 1            

    This class is divided into two parts – the first is the study, practice, and development of foundational drawing

    skills, and the second is the application of these skills to create original works. Various dry media, such as pencil, charcoal, and chalk will be explored, as well as pen and ink. Students are expected to allow for time outside of class to complete work satisfactorily. Students must pay a lab fee with this course.

    Prerequisite: Design Foundations or Art 1                  

    Students will study, develop, and apply skills as they relate to painting using watercolor and acrylic techniques. Color theory will be explored, and students will work on developing a better understanding of color-mixing. Various artists and their works will be examined. Students are expected to allow for time outside of class to complete work satisfactorily. Students must pay a lab fee with this course.

    Various media such as  clay, wire, and recycled objects and various processes such as carving, modeling, and fabricating are investigated as means for creating three-dimensional artistic forms. Professional sculptors’ works are studied. Students are expected to allow for time outside of class to complete work satisfactorily. Students will need to furnish some materials.

  • Full Year Course    
    1 credit 

    This is a more advanced foundation course than Design Foundations.  A wide range of materials, procedures, and subjects are explored with an emphasis on proper technique and originality. Projects include drawing, painting, design, printmaking, ceramics, crafts, art history, aesthetics, and criticism.  Students must pay a lab fee with this course.

    The course is intended to broaden student awareness and capabilities in visual art through studio experiences in drawing,  painting,  design, ceramics, printmaking, and art history.  Students will be introduced to new media. Students will be expected to show  increased  skill  in previously introduced materials.  Students are expected to allow for time outside of class to complete work satisfactorily.

    Full Year Course
    Prerequisite: Art 2 Grades 11-12
    1 credit   

    The course will  develop  skills,  creativity,  and  individual interpretation  through  concentrated  study  in  specific media  areas. Students will learn some new, more advanced techniques and media. Students will continue to refine and master skills previously learned. Areas to be covered on a nine-week basis include drawing, painting, ceramics, design, metals, printmaking, and art history.  Concept development, focusing on contemporary art ideas, is at the forefront of all projects. Students are expected to allow for time outside of class to complete work satisfactorily. Students must pay a lab fee with this course.

    ART 4 
    Full Year Course Prerequisite Art 3 Grade 12
    1 credit     

    The course is designed to allow students to focus on development of style and concentration in specific areas and through a semester of guided independent study. The first semester covers a series of conceptual prompts that students will interpret in chosen media. The second semester allows advanced students to explore media, subject, and technique possibilities in any areas of student’s choice. Research is required as well as studio time outside of class. Students must pay a lab fee with this course. 

  • Semester Course Grade 11-12
    1/2 credit   

    A course in drawing, 2-dimensional art of 3-dimensional art for students who are highly motivated and have previous art training. This is an independent study course where students will be expected to work on both work conception and production. Students will need to create 3 works throughout the course of the semester. Critique and studio time outside of class is expected.  Teacher approval will be required. Students must pay a lab fee with this course. Students must also be enrolled in Art 3/4.

    Students will apply knowledge of the elements of art and principles of design to create unique works of art through various printmaking techniques such as etching, linocut, and monotype. Artists and their processes will be studied throughout the course. Students are expected to allow for time outside of class to complete work satisfactorily, and may need to furnish some materials.

  • Ceramics 2 - 628

    Semester course  Grades: 10-12  
    1/2 Credit  
    Prerequisite:  Ceramics 1  

    Wheel-throwing, hand building, and glazing practices are explored at a deeper level to create complex and original ceramic works of art. Advanced problem solving, concept development, and study of exemplar ceramic work will be honed throughout the course. Students must pay a lab fee with this course.
